Nigerian Director Rick Famuyiwa Is Developing An African Princess Fairy Tale Movie For Disney Titled ‘Sade’

Walt Disney studios are reported to be developing a live-action fairytale film ‘Sadé’, which will be centred on an African princess character and no other than the Nigerian-American born director of ‘Dope’, Rick Famuyiwa being attached to produce.

Disney had bought a pitch from another Nigerian Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer, who will co-write the screenplay about the lead character, a young African girl named Sadé whose kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil force and accepts her newly discovered magical powers to protect her people, with the help of the kingdom’s prince.

Famuwiya will produce the film while Scott Falconer will executive produce through their Verse production banner. Tendo Nagenda and Zoe Kent are overseeing the project for the studio while the director has yet to be named.

This move by Disney may not be unconnected with the massive success recorded this year by Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Black Panther had its worldwide box office grosses hitting $1.35 billion. It’s the third-highest domestic performer of all time at $700 million.
